Abstract
The bit error rate (BER) is calculated as a function of the laser phase noise, the intermediate filter bandwidth and the bit rate. The calculation is based on the derived probability density function (PDF) of the detected envelope signal. The evaluation of the BER gives a direct criterion for the permissible laser linewidth.
