Abstract
A biconical taper amplifier utilizing an Er/sup 3+/-doped cladding fiber is discussed. A maximum gain of 0.6 dB in a 2.4-Gb/s optical transmission experiment was obtained with a taper about 40 mm long. This result shows the potential of a new structure for Er/sup 3+/-doped coupling and amplifying components.<>
