Abstract
The gain- to index-guiding transition predicted by the lateral analysis of weakly index-guided injection lasers is experimentally demonstrated for an AlGaAs rib-LOC structure. Good agreement between theory and experiment is found. Our results indicate that a lateral index step as small as 2.5 à 10¿3 is sufficient to overcome the carrier-induced anti-guiding effects in AlGaAs lasers and to make them effectively index-guided.
