Abstract :
Low-cost optical transmission systems consisting of GaAlAs transmitter devices, Si-APD receivers and single-mode fibres with 1.2 ¿m cutoff have been investigated. Theoretical and experimental results are presented which demonstrate the potential as well as the limitations of such systems for local network applications.
