Abstract :
The finite-element method is applied to the analysis of curvature losses of whispering gallery modes in an optical dielectric disk. Numerical examples on the dielectric disks with various side shapes are given. We also demonstrate that when the curvature radius of the disk is large enough, the difference between the propagation constants obtained by considering and by ignoring the curvature loss is very small
