Abstract :
This article focuses on how the Midwest Independent Transmission Operator and American Transmission Company managed a disaster recovery event of significant proportions and duration following outages caused by a flood in the upper Peninsula of Michigan in May 2003. It is an example of how transmission system operators avoid system collapse and isolation and prevent cascading outages over a wider proportion of the electric transmission delivery system in a region.
