Abstract :
Co films 1 to 3 nm thick were prepared by evaporation in an ultra high vacuum system and the magnetic moment was measured ´in situ´. Then a Pd or Mn overlayer was deposited on this Co film without breaking the vacuum and again the dipole moment was measured. The increase of the dipole moment was equivalent to an increase in the thickness of the ferromagnetic Co film by 0.15 nm for the Mn overlayer, and by 0.35 nm for the Pd overlayer respectively.
