Abstract :
A large-capacity fast-access magnetic disk storage unit (GEMMY) has been developed. This storage unit has a capacity of 8.8 GByte, an average seek time of 12ms and a data transfer rate of 4.4 MByte/s. A high areal density of 62 kbit/mm2has been achieved using a thin film medium and film head combination while at the same time minimizing head/disk spacing to less than 0.2 μm. In addition, high-speed operation and good reliability have been assured through the use of a compact two-in-one dual actuator and a symmetrical shell-shaped head disk assembly.
