Abstract :
This paper presents a new technique for gating silicon controlled rectifiers or other power switches in static inverters, converters, and cycloconverters. The approach uses a carrier frequency to transmit the proper gating signal from the logic circuits to the power switches with electrical isolation. This technique is particularly useful when the fundamental frequency of the power conversion system is very low or is equal to zero. Circuit diagrams and a photograph of a carrier frequency gating circuit are presented.
