Pattern independent 2.5 Gbit/s CPFSK transmission with a sensitivity of -44.4 dBm has been achieved using alternate mark inversion (AMI) encoded data for direct current modulation of semiconductor lasers with nonideal FM response. The same receiver architecture can be used for AMI and NRZ data
