Abstract :
The nondiagonal component n2B⊥ of the nonlinear refractive index is measured relative to the diagonal component n2B||, in polarisation-maintaining fibres utilising optical Kerr modulation properties in the presence of chromatic and polarisation dispersion. The ratio n2B⊥/n2B|| is determined to be 0·34 and is in good agreement with the theoretical prediction of 1/3, which assumes isotropic media and a pure electronic contribution.
