Abstract :
The paper starts by tracing the history of CCITT modem recommendations (the V-series) from the 1960s until the present. This leads into a review of the methods of implementation used in current products. With cost minimisation in mind, an alternative design approach is then outlined which offers potential advantages for the simpler, yet currently still popular, modem specifications. The paper concludes with a glimpse into the future by outlining the latest CCITT V.fast proposals
