Abstract
One route to improving industrial research and getting it funded (or part funded) by someone else is to collaborate across Europe. This approach opens up several funding possibilities but, as there is no such thing as a "free lunch", there are potential drawbacks and pitfalls to consider to maximise the benefits that can be gained. These aspects are explored and practical advice given about how to start the process of being successful at collaborating in Europe. Doing it the wrong way can result in wasting a lot of time and money-and lead to losing the essential competitive edge in both the European and home markets.<>
