Abstract
The solution obtained by J.A. Stratton (1941) for an ellipsoidal paramagnetic particle in a homogeneous magnetic field is adapted for easy numerical evaluation. This is done to estimate the influence of the shape of particles on forces in magnetic separation. Calculations are carried out for a particle with a uniform volume susceptibility of 0.1; the susceptibility of the surrounding medium is zero. The ratios of the semiaxes of the ellipsoid do not exceed 1:10. Under these assumptions, the direction of the interior field differs from that of the primary field by a few degrees at the most. The magnetic moment differs from that of a sphere of equal volume by about 5% at the most. Also, torque is rather small
