Abstract
A hardening philosophy that applies to many nonionizing radiation environments is considered. The philosophy, which stresses the application of zonal shields plus penetration protection, can provide low-cost hardening against such diverse nonionizing radiation as p-static, lightning, electromagnetic interference, electromagnetic pulse (EMP), high-intensity radiated fields (HIRF), electromagnetic radiation, and high power microwaves. The authors describe the application of this philosophy to Army helicopters. They develop a unified specification, complete with threat definitions and test methods, that illustrates integration of EMP, lightning, and HIRF at the box qualification level
