  • Abstract
    A new vector quantisation scheme based on a perceptually weighted signal-to-noise ratio (WSNR) is proposed. The authors show that the application of the LBG procedure in the DCT domain using the WSNR as the function to be optimised leads to substantial improvement in the perceptual quality of the decoded images, compared to the LBG procedure in the pixel domain.
