Abstract :
Important design and operational issues are projected for superconducting magnets that might be wound of the new high-temperature superconductors with critical temperatures above 90 K. Specifically, the thermal stability and behavior of the magnet winding and driving forces that tend to upset the thermal equilibrium within the winding are analyzed quantitatively for 4-K and 77-K magnets and the results for the two systems are compared. The analysis indicates that a 77-K magnet system would best be operated in the adiabatic mode. It is also shown that the new superconductor would be stable when used in the form of tape about 10-mm wide.
