Abstract :
A new optical cross connect based on WDM and space-division multiplexing is proposed. Optical space-division switches are used to interconnect WDM active routing cross connects to make a large scale optical cross connect employing wavelength reuse. The system can be implemented without the technological challenges faced by simple, WDM optical cross connects. The switching capacity of the system, constructed presently, can be over one terabit per second at a line rate of 10 Gb/s.<>
