Abstract
This paper presents some of the developments of adaptive control during a 10-year period around 1960. This was a very fertile period when many ideas were developed that later proved useful. The motivation came from several sources-advances in control theory, demanding applications in flight control and process control, the desire to develop systems with learning capabilities, and problems related to decision-making under uncertainty. This article deals almost exclusively with development in the Western world.
