BIGFON: Preparation for the Use of Optical Fiber Technology in the Local Network of the Deutsche Bundespost

The Deutsche Bundespost will be starting its tests with various prototypes of BIGFON, a broad-band integrated optical fiber local telecommunications network, at the end of 1983. The different systems proposed will create the basis for deciding on a general model, the realization of which is envisaged for 1985 or 1986. Current perspectives have made the development of inexpensive, highly integrated electronic systems particularly important.
