Abstract :
A new display panel with internal memory, employing phosphor-coated dc gas-discharge cells for color TV, is presented. This discharge cell has a triode structure, in which a positive column is formed in the grid-anode space. The UV radiation emitted by the pure-xenon positive column is used to excite the phosphors. Memory operation is accomplished by shifting the times of the continuous maintaining pulses applied to the grid and anode. The applied grid pulse is 1.0-µs duration, 5.0-µs period, and 100-V am, plitude. The anode pulse is 2.0-µs duration, 5.0µs period, and 70-V amplitude. The memory mechanism is the same as the one employed in the pulsed memory method of Holz, i.e., time for space charge accumulation. The display of 32 gray levels is demonstrated by a time modulation in a field technique at TV rate. A time-averaged spot green luminance of 1000 fL at 0.86 lm/W is achieved.
