Abstract :
The authors describe the results of an experimental study of a write pulse slimming technique for an unbiased digital magnetic recording channel. It is compared with the usual replay equalization technique implemented by tapped delay lines. The similarities and differences of the two techniques are pointed out. A practical advantage of this equalizer is that it can easily be built inside the write head driver circuitry, and therefore leave less demanding requirements for the replay equalizer. Further, it allows more equalization to take place without the attendant problems of noise that influence the design of the replay equalizers, although it does cause some reduction of recorded signal
