Abstract
The author gives a brief summary of partial response systems as they apply to magnetic recording systems. A summary of coding techniques useful for partial response systems is given. Most magnetic recording systems in use today use peak detection and thus employ some type of modulation code to control the peak shift. Currently, there is a great deal of interest in partial response systems. Codes will also be used with these systems, but they could be very different in nature from the modulation codes used today. Several types of codes for use with partial response equalization are surveyed
