Abstract :
A method to calculate the transient response of a synchronous machine using fast Fourier transforms is presented. The machine is described by its operational inductances defined in the frequency domain. The use of the method for solving transients where the post-fault form of the voltages is known (such as a sudden short circuit) and where it is unknown (such as a line switch) is described. The method is validated against closed-form solutions and against the results from a conventional time-stepping program which uses equivalent circuits
