Abstract :
This paper is based on a study conducted by Bell Communications Research of outage data for various stored program control (SPC) switching systems (exchanges) in various Bell Operating Companies. The outage causes were first classified into four basic categories. These basic causes were then subcategorized to further define the causes of failures.
