Abstract :
Direct measurements of the field dependence of magnetostrictive strain in metallic glasses are reported. Fe- and Fe-Ni-based alloys have been studied in transverse field annealed and surface crystallized forms. It is demonstrated that for devices based on a magnetostrictive response and operated in a closed-loop mode around H=0, field annealed material should be chosen. For operation in a constant bias field, the surface crystallized material is superior. Quadratic coefficients for Fe-based alloys are around 0.01 ppm/(A/m)2
