Abstract :
A cost-effective method is reported for improving the quality of existing LAMPF side-coupled-linac quadrupole magnet doublets. New coils, without steering windings but with improved quality control and turn counting, were manufactured and a new pole shape was designed using a combination of computer simulation and field-harmonic measurements. An investment casting was used for the difference between the old pole and the new pole. The castings met all dimensional tolerances and expectations of magnetic performance. The new pole pieces are shown to provide reduced levels of integral harmonics and increased integrated gradient strength. Data of the old and new designs verify these improvements.
