Abstract :
The construction and performance of a 12-T 127-mm-bore superconducting magnet is presented. The system consists of two concentric solenoids with an 8-T outer two-stage NbTi coil with a bore inner diameter of 240 mm, a winding outer diameter of 326 mm, and a length of 391 mm which is connected in series with a 246 mm-long insert coil constructed of multifilamentary Nb3Sn. The insert coil was reacted after winding. The system has stored energy of 782 kJ and operates at 4.2 K with a transport current of 144 A, which may be achieved within 30 min. The magnet can be operated in powered or quasi-persistent mode using a persistent current switch.
