Abstract
Describes the final design of the coil, the manufacturing of the 6 kA composite conductor and the coil construction. The magnet, having an internal bore of 0.6 m, is based upon niobium tin material and constructed following the react-and-wind concept. The coil is composed of 6 double pancakes and cooled with forced flow supercritical helium. Thirty-six niobium tin strands are cable to a Rutherford cable; the cable is reacted before conductor assembly. The reacted cable, coolant tubes, copper stabilizers and stainless steel strips (7 components) are soldered together in one operation. The conductor is insulated with three layers of glass-tape. The double pancakes are wound on a G-10 coil former having machined grooves for the first turn of each pancake; the coil assembly is vacuum impregnated after winding. Instrumentation is included to measure voltages, temperatures and strain.
