Abstract :
Design, fabrication, and some properties of a 17-kA model superconductor of limited length for the Next European Torus toroidal-field coils are reported. The design calls for a maximum local field of 11 T. The conductor is to be cooled by forced-flow supercritical helium. The Nb3Sn cable has a central glass-fiber ribbon for AC loss reduction and is soldered on both sides to Cu-CuNi stabilizers having a honeycomb structure. The conductor has an outer steel jacket for mechanical reinforcement.
