Abstract :
The preparation, microstructure, and magnetic properties are investigated of thin-film ferromagnetic multilayers made from alternating layers of cobalt and chromium or tungsten. It is found the periodic systems can be prepared at very small, individual film thicknesses and that these multilayers show interesting magnetic properties. Properties that are normally considered to be intrinsic, such as saturation magnetization and anisotropy, vary considerably with the multilayer periodicity and cobalt film thickness. Of particular interest is the development of a component of perpendicular anisotropy.
