Abstract :
The use of an electret as a volatile organic chemical and particulate sensor is proposed, along with a mechanism to sense polar gases, particles, and droplets. The electret detects changes in the concentration of volatile organic chemicals and particulates, which are constituents of the combustion process, as a result of dipole-charge and induced dipole-charge interactions between the negative charge in the electret´s polymer layer and the combustion products.<>
