Abstract
The authors propose a new type of fibre, the birefringent splittable composite (BISPEC) fibre designed for polarisation maintaining optical devices. In addition to the good polarisation axis alignment (within 1°), this fibre has the added important property that it can readily be split to allow for standard fibre connection by fusion splicing
