Abstract
For practical application of an insulating gas three different properties, i.e. the dielectric strength, the boiling point, and the toxicity are important. Based on semi-quantitative physical arguments and confirmed by known data of 41 gases, it is shown that these properties are related to two basic molecular characteristics, the polarizability ¿ and the ionization potential ¿i. The relations found are helpful in determining general trends and estimating unknown data.
