Abstract :
Magnetization measurements and neutron diffraction experiments are performed on the normal spinel Co[RhCr]S4. They show the existence of two magnetic transitions. Up to Tc=125 K, this compound displays a triangular configuration, in which the Co 2+ moments lying on the two FCC tetrahedral sites of the spinel structure have opposite transverse components in addition to the longitudinal ones which are antiparallel to the Cr3+ moments lying on the octahedral sites. In the range Tc< T<TN (TN=210 K), Co[RhCr]S4 is an antiferromagnet with antiparallel Co2+ moments on the tetrahedral sites and Cr3+ in the paramagnetic state. These results are discussed and found to be satisfactorily explained in the molecular field approximation
