Abstract :
A test apparatus is described which allows precise offtrack positioning of digital data storage (DDS) heads. This apparatus is used for calibration of tracking error signals (TESs). In addition, more detailed measurements were made of the writing and offtrack reading characteristics of DDS heads and a simple model was developed based on these measurements which successfully predicts TES vs. offtrack displacement
