Power generation from diverse renewable energy sources has been a major objective of government supported energy research programmes around the world for more than a decade. However, despite the attention to a wide range of technologies, only geothermal energy and some forms of hydro power have now reached the maturity needed to compete commercially with fossil and nuclear plants to provide base-load generation capacity
