Abstract
Single-phase induction motors are widely used in home appliances. Even a small material saving in one of the motors will result in a substantial cost reduction for the mass production as a whole. To share a common winding for different pole numbers is one of the effective approaches to save active material. However, even though a one-winding two-speed approach is often used for three-phase induction motors, there is no report on the application of this approach for single-phase induction motors so far. Efforts were made by the authors to design and produce single-phase induction motors with 4-8 pole common winding. Test results have verified the design data and substantial material saving has been achieved
