Abstract
The small-signal gain of free electron lasers is calculated by solving the single-electron equations of motion to second order in the laser field. Analytic results for free electron lasers with linearly varying wiggler resonant frequency show that the small signal gain of such lasers behaves differently from that of lasers with uniform wiggler resonant frequency and is significantly smaller.
