Abstract :
Many object recognition schemes require accurate estimates of boundary distance. For some years the standard technique was to take diagonal steps as contributing square root (2) pixel, and other steps as contributing 1 pixel. Kulpa found that this measure systematically over-estimates the boundary distance. The author studies the Kulpa estimator with the aim of obtaining a deeper insight into its operation.
