Abstract :
Distribution automation is increasingly being applied to improve the performance of utility distribution system. This article discusses many of the key elements of a distribution reliability improvement program and fault-prevention techniques. First is the short discussion of the importance of first establishing a well-protected and coordinated distribution system. Next will be a discussion about how reliability improvements can be predicted based on feeder design (i.e., the number of feeder segments and protective devices used). The article concludes with a short discussion of the application of risk analysis tools to evaluate the economics of different reliability improvement initiatives.
