Abstract :
One of the steps in preparing newspaper presses for a new printing run is composing a lineup. A newspaper lineup arranges the printing run´s many image plates among the numerous press locations where images are transferred to paper; this is both a configuration problem and a combinatorial problem. Since lineup design relies heavily on expert heuristics, a knowledge-based approach is well suited for developing a system that configures a press quickly. The authors discuss the press lineup problem, describe printing presses and operational modes, and examine the knowledge-representation and problem-solving methods that were used in designing their system. They also address system functions, performance, and their efforts to develop a generic system that most newspaper publishers can use.<>
