Abstract :
A new multistage decoding (MSD) algorithm for multilevel codes is proposed. The algorithm uses several decisions in the first stage, if the difference in distance measure between the codeword found by standard MSD (SMSD) and the received word is greater than a certain threshold. An application of the algorithm for a coded modulation system shows that more than half of the coding gain of maximum likelihood decoding (MLD) of the modulation system over SMSD is achieved, with only two decisions in the first stage.
