Abstract :
The chemically pumped iodine laser (CPIL) system as a fusion driver is described. Present modeling supports a conservative value of 6 percent for overall large-scale system efficiency. The iodine inversion is produced through energy transfer from metastable O2(1Δ) molecules which are, in turn, produced in a chemical generator. Our generator is described together with diagnostic measurements which indicate 100 percent efficiency for the production of O2(1Δ).
