Abstract
A sketch of the practical development of brakes in railroad services; an analysis of the results of investigation of brake-shoe friction; a definition of the requirements and limitations of brake efficiency in practice; a consideration of the loss of braking efficiency through disturbance of the normal rail-pressures brake retardation and a description of the means of compensating for it. The peculiar characteristics of the magnetic brake are also briefly described. Illustrated.
