Abstract :
The design of electrical machines is a complex problem which accounts for magnetic, mechanical and thermal aspects. All these problems may be described using the finite element analysis technique, coupled with CAD techniques, offering a simple and flexible way for introducing the numerous data (machine geometry, grid, material characteristics etc.), and an easy way for interpreting the numerical results and postprocessing them. The authors show how these problems are dealt with within a rather small group dealing with research and teaching in this area. However, this example is an indication for small- and medium-sized firms, which, given a limited amount of both human and financial resources, would like to benefit from recent computer developments for their products
