Abstract
When scientists first began to generate and detect electromagnetic waves, it never occurred to them that they might have practical applications in communications. The author discusses the work of Sir Oliver Lodge in this area and explains how it took the arrival of the ambitious young Italian, Marconi, to spur Lodge into patenting the ideas relating to electric telegraphy
