Abstract :
A novel system and method of light coupling analysis and calibration for the 4×4 detector module of the Columbia University spherical PET (positron emission tomography unit) is discussed, and its performance is evaluated. The new features of the system include a simulated-scintillation-signal generator which effectively replaces the scintillation analog-to-digital converter for simultaneous recording of all signals of interest. A fast and reliable calibration method for the 4×4 detector module and front-end circuit has been developed using this calibration system. Since the proposed calibration method is based on the light coupling analysis, it is possible to use an uncollimated source for the position calibration, thereby eliminating the time-consuming procedure usually used in calibration of the position-encoded detector assembly
