Abstract
This article takes a sideways look at the problems of applying quality management procedures in practice on real software system development projects in a commercially competitive environment. It draws on the author´s experience of many different projects run by several different companies. It identifies problems not normally addressed in quality plans and standards, but which can have a detrimental effect on a project´s progress. It concludes by suggesting ways in which these problems may be averted.<>
