Abstract
The optical properties of human tissue are reviewed and the effects of UV and visible radiation on human tissue summarized. Therapeutic photomedicine using lamp sources is reviewed and current applications using lasers are discussed. Techniques for achieving selective thermal effects are summarized; these include the use of endogenous and exogenous chromophores as targets and the use of pulsed radiation to confine the heating effects to the targets. Future therapeutic uses of lasers may depend on these target-specific effects.
